Walk Mode
Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 7, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what Walk Mode stores and how that data is handled when you use the app. Walk Mode requires a Walk Mode account to use the app.
What We Store
Walk Mode stores the profile information you choose to add, such as your display name, profile photo, cover photo, and when your profile was created.
The app also stores walk and progress data, including planned walks, routes, travel times, distances, walk history, check-ins, badge progress, ratings, and the places you have already seen in the app.
When you sign in with your Walk Mode account, Walk Mode stores the sign-in method you use, such as Apple, Google, or email. Password reset emails are handled by our account service.
Walk Mode stores app settings too, such as your preferred number of markers, place preferences, appearance mode, and distance unit.
When you sign in or your session refreshes, our account service records the sign-in event together with your IP address and the device and browser identification your device sends. We keep these records to secure accounts, spot suspicious sign-ins, and diagnose faults.
Location Data
If you allow location access, Walk Mode uses your device location while the app is open and for background walk features. We use location to center maps, help you pick a starting point, track progress, show nearby places, and update Live Activities during a walk.
The app keeps your most recent location in memory while you use it and stores route coordinates and completed walk paths as part of walk planning and history.
Walk Mode does not control where you walk or which places you visit. You are responsible for using location and check-in features in a safe and lawful way. See our Terms of Service for more on walks, check-ins, and safety.
Steps and Motion Data
If you allow Motion & Fitness access, Walk Mode uses your device's built-in motion sensors to count your steps while a walk is active. The step count for each finished walk is saved with that walk in your walk history, on your device and in our cloud service, so it can be shown alongside distance and time.
Step counting is optional. If you do not allow Motion & Fitness access, walks simply do not show a step count. You can change this at any time in iOS Settings under Privacy & Security > Motion & Fitness.
Walk Mode does not read data from or write data to Apple Health (HealthKit). Step counts come only from the device's step counter during your walks and are estimates, not medical measurements.
Apple Watch
Walk Mode includes an Apple Watch companion app. During a walk, your iPhone sends the current walk to your watch - the route shape, your position on the route, remaining distance and time, and the stops you have checked off - using Apple's device-to-device Watch Connectivity.
The watch app is a display for the walk running on your iPhone. It does not collect its own location, health, or motion data, and it does not send data anywhere other than back to your iPhone. Walk data shown on the watch is handled under this policy and is cleared when the walk ends or the app is removed.
Cloud Storage
Walk Mode requires a Walk Mode account. Your profile, walk history, badges, check-ins, discovery state, friend features, posted activity, comments, reactions, and related progress data are stored in our secure cloud service so they sync across devices and can be restored after reinstalling.
Your display name, profile photo, and cover photo are stored in the cloud so friends can recognize you in social parts of the app.
International Data Transfers
Your data is stored in the United States. Supabase, Inc. hosts our database and files there, and RevenueCat, Inc. handles subscriptions there.
For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, these transfers are covered by the Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the European Commission, together with the UK Addendum where it applies. Contact us if you would like a copy.
Maps and Place Features
Walk Mode uses Apple map and place features for place search, address lookup, nearby places, walking directions, Look Around images, and map snapshots.
The app may also cache place images on your device so they load faster later.
Photos and Camera
You can add profile photos, cover photos, and photos from a check-in. If you choose to take a check-in photo, Walk Mode uses the camera only for that photo.
Photos you add may be stored on your device and in our cloud service. Posted check-in photos may be visible to people who can see that post.
Friends and Social Features
If you use social features, Walk Mode stores friend requests, friend lists, posts, comments, reactions, and read status for activity and notifications.
When you post a walk or check-in, other people who can see it may see your display name, profile photo, walk name, route shape, places on the walk, check-in place, posted photo, comments, and reactions.
Walks You Share With Others
Walk Mode lets you plan a walk with other people. We store the planned walk - starting point, destination, stops, route, and the places on it - along with who was invited, when, and how they answered.
While a shared walk is running, the other people on that walk can see your current position, and you can see theirs. This happens only for a walk you accepted, and only while it is active. Your position is deleted when you finish or leave the walk, and when the walk ends or is cancelled.
Notifications
If you allow notifications, Walk Mode stores a device token so we can tell you when someone invites you on a walk. Sending a notification passes that token and the message to Apple's Push Notification service, which delivers it to your device. You can turn notifications off in iOS Settings.
Generated Place Content
Walk Mode may generate short place summaries and image searches for some points of interest and route highlights using Apple features on the device.
Purchases
Walk Mode offers Walk Mode Plus, which unlocks paid features. Purchases are handled by Apple. Walk Mode also uses a purchase service to check whether Plus is active so the app can unlock the right features.
Legal Bases for Processing
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we process your personal data on these legal bases:
- Performance of a contract. Creating and running your account, storing and syncing your walks, walk history, badges, check-ins, and settings, and providing the friend and social features you choose to use. This also covers your location, because Walk Mode plans and follows walks around where you are and cannot work without it. It covers walks you plan with other people as well, including showing your position to the others on a walk you accepted an invitation to, and sending you a notification when someone invites you.
- Consent. The optional extras: Motion & Fitness data for step counting, and the camera and photo library for profile, cover, and check-in photos. You give this consent through the iOS permission prompts and can withdraw it at any time in iOS Settings, without affecting processing carried out before you withdrew it.
- Legitimate interests. Keeping the service secure, preventing abuse, diagnosing faults, and maintaining and improving how the app works. We balance these interests against your rights and you can object as described below.
- Legal obligation. Keeping records we are required to keep, such as records relating to purchases.
Data Sharing
Walk Mode does not sell your personal information and does not show ads. We share personal data only with the providers below, and only so the app can work as described in this policy.
- Supabase, Inc. Hosts our database, accounts, and file storage. Supabase acts as our processor and handles your profile, walks, walk history, check-ins, badges, photos, and social activity on our instructions.
- RevenueCat, Inc. Manages Walk Mode Plus subscriptions and tells the app whether Plus is active. RevenueCat acts as our processor and receives an app user identifier along with purchase, device, and platform information. It does not receive your walks or location.
- Google LLC. Only if you choose Sign in with Google. Google authenticates you as its own user and, with your agreement, passes us basic profile information such as your name and email address. Google is independently responsible for the account data it holds about you, under its own privacy policy.
- Apple Inc. Handles App Store payment and billing, Sign in with Apple if you choose it, and the map, place, and directions features the app uses. Apple is independently responsible for that processing, under its own privacy policy.
We do not share your personal data with anyone else, except where we are required to by law.
What You Have to Provide
You need a Walk Mode account to use the app, so the sign-in details and profile data that come with it are required. Location access is required too, because the app plans and follows walks around where you are. If you do not provide these, or you turn location off, the app cannot work and you will not be able to use it. Everything else, including step counting, photos, and the social features, is optional and the app works without it.
Data Retention and Deletion
We keep your account data, including your profile, walks, walk history, check-ins, badges, and social activity, for as long as your account exists, because the app needs it to work.
You can delete your account at any time from your profile in the app. Deleting your account removes your profile and the walk and social data associated with it from our cloud service. Copies may remain in routine backups for up to 28 days, after which those backups expire and are overwritten.
Data held only on your device, including cached place images, is removed when you clear it inside the app, delete the app, or when the system reclaims the cache.
Your Choices
You can choose whether to allow location access, allow Motion & Fitness access for step counting, add a profile photo or display name, post walks or check-ins, use the Apple Watch app, and make an in-app purchase. You can also remove the app to stop future collection on that device.
Your Privacy Rights
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, data protection law gives you the following rights over your personal data:
- Access. Ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Rectification. Ask us to correct data that is wrong or incomplete.
- Erasure. Ask us to delete your data. You can do this yourself at any time by deleting your account in the app.
- Restriction. Ask us to limit how we use your data while a question about it is resolved.
- Portability. Ask for a copy of the data you provided to us so you can take it elsewhere.
- Objection. Object to processing we carry out on the basis of our legitimate interests.
- Withdrawing consent. Turn off Motion & Fitness, camera, or photo access at any time in iOS Settings. This does not affect processing we carried out before you withdrew consent.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the address at the end of this page. We answer within one month and free of charge. We may ask you to confirm your identity first, so that we do not hand your data to someone else.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority if you believe we have handled your personal data unlawfully.
Children
Walk Mode is not directed at children. You must be of legal age in your country to use the app, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone younger. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
This Website
walkmodeapp.com sets no cookies, runs no analytics, and does not track visitors. Nothing on this site is needed to use the app.
Security
Walk Mode relies on the security protections provided by Apple and other service providers, but no storage or transmission method can be guaranteed completely secure.
Policy Updates
This policy may be updated if the app's data practices change. The version on this site applies from its stated effective date.
Who Is Responsible for Your Data
Walk Mode is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy and decides how it is used. You can reach us about anything in this policy, or ask for our registered details, at the contact address below.
